PEPNet-Northeast
formerly the Northeast Technical Assistance Center (NETAC)

Enhance your professional skills through NETAC's Professional Internship Program!

Purpose:
To give professionals and graduate students the opportunity to develop their skills in a specific area and then directly apply this knowledge at their home institution. The ultimate goal is to positively affect recruitment, retention, or graduation of individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing in postsecondary programs in the Northeast region (see NETAC goals).

Eligibility:
Applicants should:

  • Already possess basic knowledge and training in a particular field of professional activity and be able to demonstrate the potential for practically applying what they learn during their internship at their home institutions.
  • Possess a strong interest in applying their professional training to support deaf and hard of hearing students wishing to pursue postsecondary education.

NETAC and the applicant's home institution will have a written agreement detailing the conditions, objectives, perceived outcomes, and responsibilities of each organization. This agreement will be reached before an applicant is accepted. Agreement must also be reached for a supervisor/mentor at the site where the internship will occur.

Possible areas of study:

  • transition
  • career awareness programs
  • grant writing
  • distance learning
  • educational access services (interpreting, tutoring, notetaking, assistive listening devices)
  • enrollment and retention
  • innovative technology (C-Print® technology, captioning, automatic speech recognition)
  • instruction (mathematics, written English, science)
  • student development and counseling

Location of internship:
Internships can be completed at any institution in the Northeast. Requests for internships in other parts of the United States will be considered individually.

Length of internship:
The duration is flexible, depending on the individual and program of interest. Generally, an internship can last from one day to two weeks.

Expenses:
NETAC will pay your travel expenses and provide a stipend for housing and meals.

To apply:
Contact us for a copy of the application form or download it from here. A copy of the Professional Internship Program brochure is also available through our office or as a download. Telephone interviews will be conducted with all candidates.

Evaluation of internship:
The intern is expected to furnish NETAC with an evaluation of the internship experience that will also be shared with the intern's home institution. (For a copy of the evaluation, click here.) Additionally, six months after completing the internship, the intern must submit a follow-up/impact report to NETAC.
